Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, PES President

First of all, I’d like to welcome you to the PES!

The PES is the Party of socialists and social democrats in Europe. I am proud and honoured to have been its President, since 2004, and be able to contribute, in this way, to building a New Social Europe.

Since I started, the PES has been modernising, changing and innovating to become a more open, democratic, influential and effective Party for socialists and social democrats in Europe and for the benefit of all Europe’s citizens.

I am proud of what we’ve achieved so far: more coordination of social democrats in all EU institutions; a new vision of our Common Ambitions and a New Social Europe; the setting of broad political guidelines on all major issues and annual priorities for the EU agenda; being much more active in the international arena to shape globalisation; opening up the opportunity to all members of our parties to become PES activists; a more modern and interactive website. All this and more.

But there is still so much to achieve. We need a new citizens’ agenda for Europe. We want to see child care for all. An end to discrimination. A New Social Europe in and across all European countries.

The PES is our instrument to work together, campaign together, make a difference together.
