Commenting on European Commission President José Manuel Barroso's statement to the European Parliament on the Swedish labour law case, the President of the Party of European Socialists Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said "Rather than clear up the mess which the European Commission has got itself into, President Barroso has caused more uncertainty today by failing to make it clear where the European Commission stands. A few days ago he claimed that McCreevy was misunderstood and now he follows this up by not making himself understood."
"He risks setting workers against each other and thoroughly undermining support for Europe in Scandinavia. It is vital that the single market does not endanger collective agreements between trade unions and employers in Scandinavia, and I am stunned that President Barroso does not seem to understand it."
