Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore, and President of the Party of European Socialists, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen have canvassed the streets of Dublin for the Lisbon Treaty. They were joined by Joe Costello TD, Director of the Labour Party Lisbon Campaign; Ruairi Quinn, Labour Party MP; Cllr Emer Costello; Neassa Childers and Proinsias de Rossa, both Labour Party MEPs. Together with many volunteers, they distributed flyers and chatted with Dubliners.
Rasmussen said that "the economic crisis did not happen because Irish workers are lazy. I understand that the voters are angry with their governement, but they should not make the mistake to vote ‘no’ to the referendum. Ireland needs its neighbours to fight the crisis, because together, we are stronger. The only answer is a massive 'yes' on 2nd of October".
Eamon Gilmore stated that “by voting ‘no’, Ireland would pull back from Europe, and this would stop investments and job creation. We need this Treaty to guarantee workers’ rights. Europe is about solidarity: voting ‘yes’ will help our country to get out of the crisis.”
