The Lisbon strategy was agreed and defined in the Lisbon Council of March 2000. it set a new strategic goal for Europe to be attained by 2010 “to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-driven economy in the world, capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion”. This strategy covers three main aspects, known as pillars; the economic, social and environment.
The main problem regarding Lisbon is that it has been difficult to implement. We need to do better as Europe is lagging behind in economic growth, employment levels, innovation and IT, not to mention high productivity industries such as biotechnology and nanotechnology.
It is with that in mind that the PES created a network, chaired by former German Finance Minister Hans Eichel. The objective of the network is to be a good source for exchange of information and to help the implementation of the Lisbon strategy by national Member States.
