  • Right-wing extremism in Europe - Trends and Counter-Strategies

    • Date: Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 10:00
    • Organiser: Socialist Group in the European Parliament
    • Place: Ostra-Ufer 2, 01067 Dresden, Germany
    • The Socialist Group in the European Parliament warmly welcomes you to this conference in Dresden, in the Internationales Congress Center!

Right-wing extremist groups and parties have established strong networks all across Europe. With the help of new symbols, and the presentation of a moderate façade to the outside world, they are attempting to gain ground within the political centre and to influence larger parts of society.

In the face of this expansion process, the Socialist Group in the European Parliament would like to use this conference to promote an exchange between scientists, politicians and members of civil society who advocate a tolerant and cosmopolitan Europe.

During the conference, participants from all over Europe will present and openly discuss trends of right-wing extremism and democratic counter-strategies. In addition, the conference will serve as a platform for the presentation of numerous initiatives.

      Background information

Among the 14 social-democratic foundations represented within ENSoF, four foundations have taken over a coordinating role with regard to one of the 4 thematic issues of the Manifesto:
      - Fundatia Institutul Ovidiu Sincai, Romania, for New Social Europe
      - Institute for Social Integration (ISI), Bulgaria for Europe in the World
      - Fondation Jean-Jaurès, France, for Save our Planet
      - ISTAME, Greece for European Democracy and Diversity

Between mid-March and mid-May, the coordination foundations are organising 4 thematic workshops on the relevant topics in order to discuss the different aspects and approaches presented by the foundations wth ENSoF representatives as well as experts and political representatives.

These synthesising documents will be the subject of a final conference taking place end of May (probably 22 May in Straßbourg) organised by Brussels EU office of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, coordinator of ENSoF, with the aim to draw up concrete recommendations for the PES Manifesto.
