Harlem Désir, Member of the European Parliament (France) and Vice-President of the Socialist Group, has his say in the PES manifesto consultation. He speaks about the European social model and why it’s very important that we defend social rights and public services.

1. Fight for our rights by avalon on Monday, May 26, 2008 at 16:27
It is a great inniciative to defend public services and social services and I totally agree that socialists and social-democrats around Europe should lead this fight - and this is becoming more and more a fight.
However I think this general debate must be extended to all the population (not that it isn't already, but people should see it as their own fight!) and especially workers should never be passive about their rights. One of the problems is actually a kind of passivity and the lack of inniciative to deffend social rights that were so hard to get for our grandparents...
I would like thus to thank and encourage the socialists to pursuit this engagement - always hand in hand with workers!
Thank you for your message, Mr. Désir!

I agree with you Harlem and avalon : "European Social model needs to be renovated" but "it's bases must be preserved".
The European Union is admired for this social model althought poverty, unemployment have been rising over the past 8 years and inequalities have been accentuated notably between Western and Eastern Europe.
Together, Europeans inhabitants build "New social Europe" with these Ten principles for our Common Future !
Thank you Harlem !
