The Movement of social-democrats of Cyprus - EDEK – seized the opportunity of their Party Congress to demonstrate their support for child care by making their own child care petition Book and collecting signatures – as well as by showing the PES’ child care film.
The PES child care campaign made a big splash on the island when EDEK presented the PES campaign in their last congress, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Tasso Papadopoulos, EDEK party leader Yannakis Omirou, EDEK honorary president Mr. Vasos Lyssarides as well as party members and members of the civil society.
The PES message of child care for all was carried into the EDEK Congress by local children with placards.
During the week-end of the congress, EDEK also supported the PES child care campaign with stands in the town centre of Nicosia and the town of Paphos, collecting signatures for the campaign book, presenting the child care campaign as one of the cornerstones of the New Social Europe and by distributing balloons and other gadgets to many interested parents and children.
The PES child care campaign has been enthusiastically received throughout Europe from as far afield as Finland in the North where child care is a legal right, to Portugal and Ireland in the West, stopping in Bulgaria and Romania in the East, to finally have it’s latest stop in Malta and Cyprus in the south – and plenty of places in-between. Our parties are renewing and strengthening their commitment to child care, and now turning their attention to Europe to help to achieve European-wide progress towards more and better child care.
