The PES today condemned the jailing of Zakia Dhifaoui for taking part in a peaceful demonstration in Tunisia, and called for her immediate release.
Zakia Dhifaoui, a member of the Democratic Forum for Work and Freedom, was jailed for four and a half months following her arrest in July.
The President of PES Women, Zita Gurmai, said “Zakia Dhifaoui is one of thousands of Tunisians making a peaceful case for freedom, democracy and social justice. She should never have been detained and never have been condemned to a prison sentence.”
Philip Cordery, Secretary General of the PES, said “We say the Union for the Mediterranean should not have its headquarters in Tunis until Zakhia and others like her are freed, and Tunisians enjoy basic democratic rights.”
