Greeks open a road to change
The PES congratulates George Papandreou and PASOK on their sweeping victory in yesterday’s Greek polls.
Commenting on the election result, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “Papandreou’s victory is the change Greece so desperately needed. The EUR 3 billion stimulus plan for green growth and jobs is ambitious but realistic given the tough steps that will be taken to tackle tax evasion, corruption and inefficiencies. Voters have rejected the conservative austerity measures that would have been disastrous for Greece’s growth and long-term sustainability”.
“This victory shows that modern social democracy is a fundamental part of Europe’s future”, Rasmussen added.
