Last Saturday of election campaign - PES European Day of Action - People first: A new direction for Europe

On the last Saturday of the European election campaign PES member parties across Europe will be campaigning on the same issue: People First – A new Direction for Europe.

The theme, also the title of the PES manifesto for the European elections, emphasizes the parties shared commitment to take Europe in a new direction. he PES’ top demand is for a new recovery plan to create jobs and growth in Europe, in contrast to the conservatives who say Europe has already done enough!

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “Unemployment will reach 27 million next year. Conservatives like Sarkozy and Merkel say that Europe has done enough, but we social democrats and socialists will never sit back and accept such a huge rise in unemployment. There is already too much inequality and poverty across Europe without adding more misery. Europe can do more and it must do more. If we can form a new majority in the European Parliament then Europe will be forced to do more.”

Among the events where a “New Direction for Europe” will be a theme are

* Workshops and debates on the PES manifesto at the Europavox music festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France
* ‘People’s paella’ and discussion and campaigning on the PES manifesto in Madrid, Spain with PES activists from several European countries
