The Party of the European Socialists warmly congratulates the Lebanese people for the successful legislative elections last Sunday, June 7th. It will enable Lebanon to strengthen its democratic institutions, the independence and sovereignty of the country, and its security and stability.
The PES welcomes the fact that the polls were held under international supervision with observers at the polling stations. International and local observers stated that Lebanon's general election appeared free of any flagrant violations despite some organizational problems and isolated security incidents. The PES can only praise the maturity and behaviour of its citizens. We welcome President Sleiman’s support of all candidates and his sole concern for strengthening democracy.
As for the results, the victory of the 14 March coalition is a real achievement. It shows the determination of the people to strengthen the country’s democracy and independence. The PES congratulates the 14 March coalition for wining 71 seats in the 128-member body, one more than four years ago. Another success is 54 % turnout.
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, PES President, said “I personally hope that the outcome of these elections will give a strong boost to the political, social and economic development of Lebanon. The Lebanese people have spoken, now everyone must respect their vote and respect their choice.”
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen added; “The future is more than ever in the hands of the Lebanese people, through national dialogue. They must never give up, even if there are difficult moments and much to do. Europe must continue to make its contribution to good neighbourhood relations, stability in the region and economic development.”
