May 16 – PES European Day of Action on Climate change

The Party of European Socialists member parties and activists are campaigning on climate change this Saturday 16 May in at least 15 countries from Finland to Malta and from Porto to Ostend.

This is the PES’ third day of action following European campaigning days on Europe Day May 9th on the theme ‘New Social Europe – giving people a fairer deal’ and on International Women’s Day on 8 March.

Among the activities planned for this Action Day are:

• Finnish social democrat meeting in Helsinki ‘People’s Europe’ with Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and SDP leader Jutta Urpilainen discussing how to make Europe’s economy more sustainable

• In Belgium Flemish socialists from Sp.a will be giving out paper windmills in Stationsplein, Ostend with head of list Kathleen Van Brempt and head of list for the regional elections John Crombez

• Portuguese MEP Elisa Ferreira is opening her environmentally-friendly campaign headquarters in Porto

• Cypriot social democrats EDEK are organizing street campaigning in Nicosia, Lemesos, Larnaka and Paphos to promote PES policies on climate change

• German SPD is street leafleting on climate change in Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden and Bonn

• Spanish socialists PSOE are doing a bike tour in Palma, Mallorca, demonstrating a solar cooker in Santander, and holding a debate on sustainable Europe in Barcelona

• In Budapest MEP Zita Gurmai, President of PES Women, is promoting safe disposal of environmentally harmful waste (eg batteries)

• In Luxembourg German SPD MEP Jo Leinen will talk about climate change and smart green growth at a rally of social democrats and socialists from five municipalities in four countries: Luxembourg, Germany, France and Belgium

Other events will take place in Talinn (Estonia), Paris and Le Mans (France), several cities in Lithuania, Valletta (Malta), Alba Iulia (Romania) and Norrkoping (Sweden).

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “Today the dark clouds of recession and climate change hang heavy over Europe, threatening both our economic present and future. Europe is not doing enough to tackle climate change or to tackle unemployment. Yet making the investments to switch to renewable energy and energy efficiency would create the new jobs that could help lift us out of the crisis. Europe needs to be bolder. We need ambitious projects and decisive action to invest in ‘green growth’.”

You can follow all events on Saturday 16 May through the live blogging and twittering on the PES campaign website.
