PES urges the Romanian President to act constructively on national and European issues

The leader of the Party of European Socialists (PES), Poul Nyrup Rasmussen commented today on recent developments on the Romanian political scene, after the PSD was forced out of government.

"What the Romanian President did as concerns the governmental situation in this country is a detrimental step against both Romanian and European interests. This is the only possible qualification for forcing out of government a senior partner in a moment of crisis when the Romanian people need more than ever bipartisan support to take the proper measures in order to get over economic and social hardship.  It is also an amazing gesture on the eve of Presidential elections and of negotiations for the European commissioner job.”

“The European Commission needs Socialist & Democrat support to see its projects approved by the European Parliament. The EU executive should be bipartisan and reflect the European Parliament’s structure by having several top S&D commissioners. The PES believes that Romania - where the PSD won the EP elections - should propose a social democrat candidate for an EC portfolio.”

“The PES urges the Romanian President to leave egos aside and act in the Romanian and European interest by nominating a top social democrat candidate, with an EU-wide reputation, for the position of European Commissioner, thereby ensuring a smooth approval in the European Parliament."
