Zita Gurmai, Hungarian Socialist MEP and President of PES Women, has been invited by the French Parti socialiste to take charge of the rights of women in their national committee.
This unique offer was made by new party leader Martine Aubry “as a symbol of our European engagement”.
Martine Aubry – who had already consulted Zita Gurmai about the appointment - told the National Council of the Parti socialiste meeting in Paris that Zita had accepted “with her typical enthusiasm and energy” and thanked her for accepting the position.
Zita Gurmai commented afterwards “It is a huge honour for me and a recognition of the work done by all PES Women. We have put equality between women and men at the heart of the PES, and no doubt this is what Martine Aubry has in mind for the Parti socialiste.”
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “I congratulate Martine Aubry for her far-sighted and symbolically important decision to appoint the President of PES Women to the national committee of the PS. She will never regret that decision because Zita brings enormous ability and passion to the job.”
