PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen strongly welcomed Franz-Walter Steinmeier’s calls for more coordinated stimulus spending in the Eurozone. Rasmussen also backed Steinmeier’s proposal for more support for eastern European economies at risk.
“Franz-Walter Steinmeier’s words are very significant” said Rasmussen. “More coordinated stimulus spending in the Eurozone would have a huge impact. Europe needs a new and stronger recovery plan and a push from the Eurozone could be the trigger. We also need new actions in solidarity with, and support of, countries that don’t have the means to get out of the crisis on their own.”
Last week Gordon Brown called for a strengthened European growth strategy and more help for eastern European economies facing special difficulties. Writing today in the British newspaper The Guardian, Spanish Socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero acknowledges that “there is still much to be done” in fighting the crisis and backs Brown’s proposal to “boost the mobilisation of the European Investment Bank loan facilities.”
Earlier in May Zapatero announced a fresh Spanish investment in jobs and education.
Rasmussen said “There is a growing demand from PES member parties for Europe to do more to combat the crisis.”
