Congratulating the French and Spanish authorities for the arrest of the suspected military chief of Europe’s last terrorist group ETA, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said

“The arrest of the suspected military chief of ETA is good news for the people of Spain and for the whole of Europe. I hope it is a severe blow to Europe’s last terrorist group. The joint operation of French and Spanish authorities which led to the arrest is the sort of European cooperation which we need to intensify, not only to combat terrorism, but also to tackle organized crime and the trafficking of people, drugs and guns. I congratulate the Spanish and French authorities for their cooperation and their success, and I hope we will see many more successes in the future. Terrorists and international criminals must be brought to justice.”
