European elections: We need more PES, not less PES

While we await the final results of the European elections, it is obvious our socialist and social democratic family had a disappointing result.

We face a more conservative European Parliament, with a right that is more euro-sceptic and more nationalistic than before.

The low participation rate was a huge problem, especially for us. Our voters stayed away. They simply didn’t see the relevance of these elections. They did not see the political choices at European level - perhaps not surprising since these elections were mainly fought over national political disputes.

We had a European alternative, but it was not visible enough. Europe still needs a new direction. We are in the middle of a recession, and it will not go away. Wage earners are not to blame but they may end up paying the price. We will have 27 million unemployed next year unless we have a new and stronger European recovery effort. So we will continue our fight for more and better-coordinated investments in new jobs, and to save jobs. We will continue to stand up for social justice and equality. We will continue our fight for a global new deal, including a new strong global climate agreement in the coming months.

We have suffered a loss but we remain the second largest group in the European Parliament. We lost 3 percentage points overall, but we gained in ten member states including in the Czech Republic, in Sweden, in Greece and in Ireland where we are in opposition, and in Slovakia and Slovenia where we are in Government.

We need to reflect, and for our common European party to come forward with a renewed strategy and new ideas. But I say no to those who announce a profound crisis in European socialism. European citizens still depend on social democratic values for decent work, good schools, good health care and a clean environment. Europe still needs a society where everyone can participate, contribute and benefit. This is no time for dismantling our welfare states, it is time for strengthening them.

The centre-right cannot claim a victory for their policies. People are still worried abut the crisis, and the crisis remains our number one priority.

The far-right made worrying gains in the elections. People still need us to stand up for respect and tolerance for all, and to continue to fight to protect all workers from the recession.

We need more PES, not less PES. We will make new efforts to strengthen our European political party because we must engage more than ever as a political family in European politics.

More PES not less

May I suggest that PES starts a 5 year campaign a.s.a.p. and get the MEPs to convey the PES European policy agenda to local constituencies in a well planned way over these coming years. Here in Brussels I did not come across any local meeting to which a MEP came to explain why we should vote for PES members. It is OK to reach young people and internet nerds via their computers, but most people/voters were outright neglected. Useless propagande were distributed. Old fashioned grass root activism is necessary. Given the timeconstraints of MEPs it is necessary to plan this coming 5 year period in detail now so that there will be time to visit local constituencies and tell about what is going on in the Parliament and relate it to the Manifesto - topics of the day and long term action. Why not ask each PES MEP what local contacts s/he plans to have over the next 5 years and how s/he plans to present the PES Manifesto bojon71

More radical and clear ideas required

Let's not pretend the 2009 Manifesto, as it emerged was Great. It was good... but not Great. And it should have been better after the consultation, but something happened. It got "neutered" It contained vague commitments to "review" neo-liberal policies. After all that, the Manifesto ended up full of Wonk-Speak. Not good enough. Wonkers Wonk ! If there is a programme that would say clearly - that the PES wants public utilities to STAY PUBLIC AND LOCAL - that would be a start. Add to this an increasing emphasis on "humanising" the work of the ECB. Democratising workplaces. Giving guaranteed access for workplace representatives. Supporting young college and school-leavers. Finding a way round the pensions crisis. Encourage localised food sourcing and helping upgrade the infrastructure for long-life exports. One more time. PUBLIC. LOCAL. That has to be the future of the PES - and it may happen. In the next elections, our national parties will look different. By the way, Please don't rename the PES to Democrats. Please don't.

Identity crisis

Problem with current day socialists is that most of social democratic parties are suffering complete loss of identity. We all know, in simple words, what Christian democrats, liberals, green or even far right or far left want. Christian democrats, are a big party of "common sense" as average Joe, Jacques or Jaap understands it. Liberals-they want freedom for business free enterprise, liberal values. Greens are for environment. Nationalists and far right want immigrants out, less Eu more national pride. Far left want Europe communism but modernized. Can anyone explain in a plain words what social democrats were offering to people? Is there any trade mark of modern social democracy? Do we want strong welfare state, strong government investments in social programs? Most regional party's afraid to say that loudly. Do we as a political movement want stronger or weaker taxation, what do think on wars in Middle East, are we advocating the close borders to protect local workplaces or free movement and equal chances for everyone because of solidarity and human rights? Are we accepting the emerging sense of national pride and national identity across Europe or we are rejecting nationalism? No one knows. Different member parties have different positions about this, and in too many cases the platform of PES member parties were resembling of program of Christian democrats or conservatives.. Just only a bit more compassionate in wording. But if anyone wants to vote for compassionate conservatism the EPP and liberal parties offer big variety of ideas. So why should anyone vote socialists? The key to the result is in yesterdays speech of Mr. Rassmussen. Yesterday in Solvay he said that in the crisis time, the employee who is about to be getting fired would not go and vote for us. His primary concern would be how he is going to survive... And then he would think whom, among politicians he likes. This is a key. Only when PES member parties will be able to offer clear and reasonable solution to the survival of this person, if not short term but at least at long term, will this fired worker consider losing an hour of his time to go and vote for us. Otherwise, as Mr Rassmussen pointed out correctly, why would he do it? In most national program’s social democrats had not offered anything like that. Yes, SOME said that more welfare might not be a bad idea, but no one said how it should work, where money should come from, what will be attitude to business and so on. And decisions are made on national level. Many people still trust social democracy, some others just used to voting for socialists, that’s why PES is second large group, but if some clear fresh and working ideas will not be found, the result will never be better than this… Nick Gabrichidze Gallery Gabrichidze http://www.gallery-gabrichidze.com

Wake-up call

Well, I am very disappointed with the results in Portugal not so much for the Socialist results there but for the number of people who didn't vote. People don't see how being part of the EU affects their every-day life. My suggestion is a "Without the EU- Day"...A day where everything we have that is a direct or indirect result of being part of the EU would be "withdrawn". People might then see the full extenct of the priviledge! As for the results of Socialist party in Portugal, I must say it does not surprise me. I for once don't recognize people in the party as people who represent the Socialist Party I belong to. People with personal interests and actions that go gainst everything the Socialist party stands for. They have no respect for the founders nor the ideas for which the party is supposed to stand for. They are all merely using the party's name as a cover for their own private enterprises. And still, the main bodies of the party have no action against these people who stain the name and destroy everything that was built. These young in age but old and narrown-minded politicians... they care for nothing else but their own interests and have no care for the job they are supposed to do has representatives of the people. My vote is locked but many who usually swing around may have preferred to stay home than to vote for something else. It may be it is the same everywhere else in Europe...The Socialist Party should sit down and find a way to have a better grip on its members, because in the end of the day, it is the grassroot politician who has the first contact with the voters. And it is this politician who will represent the Socialist Party for the voters. How they perceive this person will influence everything else. And right now, people perceive socialist politicians has negatively as the the prejudiced prototype of "the politician" could be. That has to be changed and it should start with the higher levels of the party paying closer attention to the ones who really transmit the message... But then again, this is just my opinion...Still, I would hope that the nowadays socialist party in Portugal would be more of a reflection of the Socialist Party founded by Dr Mário Soares and others. That's the PS I belong to. That's the PS people trust and vote for. This PS is being used, abused and destroyed by those taking advantage of the good name it built...and people are not stupid...They can see through the curtains! So, in a way, hurray! At least it's a wake up call! So wake up! And do something! At the local level and at the EU level. The PES has imense potential but it has to define itself, and stop seeking this externalized locus of attention and start focusing on itself and its members more and on what it means to be a socialist. Only when politicians start embrassing their work as a job with rules and guidelines will they start doing a good job. A job for the people who elect them. Saudações Socialistas/Socialist Greetings, Rita Bento

élections au parlement européen

Merci Poul Nyrup Rasmussen. Socialiste Français, je considère qu'il faut que les socialistes, sociaux démocrates, travaillistes, continuent d'apporter une réponse commune et européenne à celle crise. Vive Le PSE!

A true European Party

I think that the PES should become a true sovranational European progressive party, also with the contribution of other external (non traditionally Socialist forces: democrats, greens and far left too) efforts: the party of European citizens and workers, with common European politics (that are not negatively influenced by national interests) and common leaders, too. President Obama has won the election with a political agenda which is storngly inspired to an "European way of life": the necessity of a national, public and free health care system, of new foreign politics based on diplomacy rather than war, the end of the myth of a self-ruling economy. Our identity lies in the French revolution ideals of freedom, equality and fraternity, in struggles for workers and civil rights, in the fight against nazifascism, tyranny and discrimination. We have to renew the "challenge" of an open welfare state based on solidarity and above all equality of changes. We have to understand that the unique true solution to globalization and open job market is not protectionism but the globalization of workers rights and incomes. We need common European strategies for the evironment with strong investments on the new sustainable sources of energy. We need to manage immigration at an Europan level, without leaving the single states alone.

Are We Boring?

From http://www.newstatesman.com/uk-politics/2009/06/labour-government-public Alexei Sayle One of the central problems with politics, particularly Socialist politics as they are currently constructed, is that on a day to day basis they are incredibly boring. This is not an accident but is a process designed to ensure that only a particular type of individual, specifically those with borderline personality disorders centred around extreme issues to do with the control and manipulation of the behaviour of others are attracted to the business of government and activism. All those with a different view are automatically locked out of the process. One way to counter this exclusionism is to have balloons and music at all Labour Party meetings and possible an all-you-can eat buffet offered at a nominal cost. I would suggest £3.50-£4.00.

CARL SCHADS SOMMERGRÛSSCHEN TO PES

MEMORY LANE. I stand at the memory lane Perhaps the hope and love's sake As never left my mouth. I hear words from my lips Who never rested in my mouth Tanks never intended words never said. I stand at the memory lane Goes against the golden morning sun In life, the solidarity, the faces Go to the light, the dancing children and the paper dragon Towards the forthcoming morning sun As yesterday's yearning made them beautiful. I stand at the memory lane Goes against the burgeoning days and playing children Goes against the freedom fields and peoples That binds the roots of their Goes against the eternal dream of peace And as a grass straw, I am submitting myself to the earth. I stand at the memory lane Towards evening the clouds, into the sunset Goes against the impending night, against the silhouettes Goes against the cliffs, the sea and the silence As I have populated with the name As only filled night of tears. I stand at the memory lane Goes against the war, lies, contempt, murder and torture As no one sees, nobody knows, nobody knows After five hundred years, I marvel Over America's bloody war history And something in me wants to be to ground. I stand at the memory lane Go with the beautiful sunrise just let you in The fear, your hand will hesitate I should have said to you it appears, after all, If the eyes in the sand that has passed here before Not even death can separate us.
