In the last time I have participated in some interesting left civil society and social democrat debates, under the PES Activists auspices at Oradea and Cluj-Napoca in Romania. The quality of the subjects and on the other hand of the speakers and listeners prove again that “the left” has a very good future in Romania and probably in Europe.

1. The Oradea debate subject:

”Parliamentary bureau - The feedback connection with citizens”

2. The Cluj-Napoca debate subjects:

”Is the Romania a success example for different cultures joining?”
”Left Romanian projects for the culture and ethnic minorities”

Hi Sorin,

I've read your post about the Romanian debate. Was just curious to learn what the main achievements of the two debates are.

Cheers

I agree with alias77; I would be curious to know a bit more on the discussions, namely on the first one... Was there any practical input on how to better connect with citizens and on how to "mesure" this connection?

The Oradea PES A. debate (few and short) conclusions are:1. It is strongly recommended to focus this year elections campaign on population special niches that will supply the Romanian social-democrat traditional ones (overseas work-migrated people, ageing & physical loss of the industry hard workers and basic agriculture workers people).2. This year it is necessary more than ever that Romanian "left" must provide into masses a credible actions program which to be in opposition with election "charities" provided by the opposite political parties.3. This year Romanian left must improve to make election campaign by using new way of mass message promotions especially by blogs, and think-tanks.4. Romanian left parties must use this year (for the first time) election campaigns the knowledge and the logistics of PES Activists. The Cluj-Napoca PES Activists debate was concentrated on organization and administrative issues; the initial debate subjects will be recurrent soon.

On the another hand PES Romania Activists have launch today a Romanian & European petition close related with "save our planet" theme from PES Manifesto 2009 at:

It's expected your involving, signing and promotion in order that this announcement needs to reach the all European citizens...

4. Great work! par noelhatch Devenir militant(e) du PSE le dimanche 6 avril 2008 à 22h08

Great stuff, it's exciting to see what other PES Activist networks are doing across Europe.

You propose to focus on the traditional core vote, there is a great article by John Tricket, the Labour MP which analyses where our electorate has gone and how we can get it back - http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/jon_trickett/2007/04/labourvalues.html. This needs to happen at European level too and even in the UK where there are a lot of misunderstandings and negative press on the EU, there is an increasing number of people  who could see EU as crucial to the issues that matter most to them, such as temporary and agency workers or the working time directives. It's about getting decent and fair rights like your colleagues, whether you're permanent or temporary staff. It's about recognising and valuing that people have other activities other than work, whether caring, volunteering or looking after their family or friends.
