Marek Siwiec, Vice-President of the European Parliament and member of the Socialist Group in the EP has initiated an action "Good Bag".

Throughout his constituency in the Wielkopolska region Marek Siwiec's assistants and members of local bodies of Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) have been distributing eco bags of the PSE Group in the EP with attached letters of the MEP and leaflets with environmental tips.

Also, the inhabitants could take part in a survey and find out about their Carbon Footprint.

The action, very much liked by the inhabitants, will be conducted in 30 districts.

PES Activists Dublin held its first activists' seminar at the offices of the European Commission in Dublin on Monday 15th September. Thirty activists from the Irish Labour Party, Parti Socialiste and Democratici di Sinistra met to hear Senator Richard Yung (PS - France) speak about European Citizenship and social rights.

Senator Yung raised the question of how far we are from building a post-nationalist political discourse across Europe. In other words a truly pan-European political debate. He situated his observations in the context of an EU paradox, i.e. that the majority of Europeans think positively about the European Union as an idea, but are much less prone to think of themselves as European citizens or to identify with the institutions of the EU.

When we engage with European matters we tend to do so through the filter of our own national identity. When we discuss European initiatives they are largely considered from the perspective of our own national discourse. While we have some sense of solidarity and common identity with people from the Atlantic to the Black Sea (and maybe even to the Urals), that sense is vaguely formed and poorly articulated.

Not only did this seminar generate a lot of discussion around these important issues, but it has sparked a debate...

The 80s were unusual in the UK. Let's call them the "bad old days". But with the right-wing Conservative government intent on pursuing a divisive social agenda, and decaying cities and public infrastructure, many people were motivated to become politically active for the first time.

We saw in Vienna how Young Socialists in Austria are aiming to emulate the famous "Rock Against Racism" campaigns from the late 1970s. This was a campaign that sprang into life after an Eric Clapton declared his support for anti-immigration Conservative Enoch Powell in the middle of a gig. The response to Clapton co-incided with development of punk rock, so the first RAR festivals boasted performances by The Clash, Buzzcocks, Steel Pulse, The Fall, X-Ray Spex, The Ruts, Sham 69, Generation X, the Tom Robinson Band, Graham Parker and the Rumour, and Misty in Roots.

Politicians are now expected to use the internet as a matter of course. This process has been led by the United States, where in most elections, there is usually a "President of the Internet Moment." This could refer to a politician who gains fleeting popularity from using the internet in a possibly innovative fashion, or enlisting a keen following of bloggers and posters to evangelise online.

Professional usage of the internet and its capabilities does not guarantee political success. Arguably, the more slick and managed the presentation, the less impact is generated. The online world seems to be attuned to phenomena rather than propaganda. In Europe, internet traffic sits outside the world of mainstream political culture, it's hard to find examples where conventionally formulated political communication strategies have been successfully translated onto the web.

Immediately following the NO vote in the recent Irish referendum activists from the Irish Labour Party, French Parti Socialiste and others have set up PES activists Dublin. We were already planning such an initiative but the referendum result gave added urgency to our work. We recognise that this is potentially a defining moment in Ireland's relationship with the EU and as a consequence in the structure and dynamics of Irish politics.

The inaugural meeting of PES activists in Ireland was held on Tuesday 24th June in the Labour Parliamentary Room in Leinster House, Dublin - the home of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament). We met below a mural which showed the early and more modern leaders of the Irish labour movement grouped around an image of Marianne leading the French people in the Revolution of 1830. Ireland's republicanism and our socialism owe much to the example of the French revolutions and meeting beneath this mural was our way of paying homage to that tradition.

Our aim is to build European Left politics on the ground in Dublin. Since June, more than 70 activists have joined our city group. There is enormous interest both in Dublin and across Ireland in what we are proposing. PES people are "on the move" in Ireland! Two events in particular have brought in extra members:...
