pleasure to support the European Women’s Lobby 50/50 campaign. We
need more women at every level of European politics, including at
the top. It has been a disgrace to see how few women were ever
mentioned in all that talk about people supposedly in the frame
for top EU jobs. I think it made people realize that something
needed to be done to promote the involvement of women. The EU is
not a men’s club.”

As a Bulgarian, the United States of Europe’s idea seems realistic and I can almost touch it. For the past 8 years life standard has raised, Bulgaria’ economy’s growing (with + 5% GDP), we do not need visas to travel, he have the possibility to travel and to meet people, the possibility to work and live where our heart is… 25,000 students leave Bulgaria every year (out of 80,000), unemployment rates are low. Two thirds of Bulgarians are Euro-optimists.
The biggest problem for Bulgaria is the corruption and control of European funds to reach their purposes.
Now let me present some other ideas for the manifesto...
Women’s rights:
Let me show you two exemples of countries where no one would say that women occupy important posts: in Iran (Islamic Republic) half of the board of directors or financial directors in State-owned companies are women and in Bulgaria (the poorest EU member) women have the same or better salaries.

PES activists are participating on the Vienna Forum to discuss the New Social Europe and to defend our values: democracy, freedom, Human Rights. We encourage everybody to spread the socialist point of views.
We should spread our voice. Improve cooperation between European and national Socialist parties is the solution. We want to build a New Social Europe based on the equity of opportunities and solidarity but to achieve it we need your help and support.
It is important to defend women rights. Being a woman should not be an obstacle. Women are intelligent, talented… Women have innovative ideas. We, women, have the support of the socialist leaders and politics. Socialists have the challenge to create a New Social Europe. They engage themselves to think and find solutions for people’s real problems. That’s why the manifesto2009 is being prepared.µ

Not long ago I learned about the PES Group in
the Committee of the Regions. To be honest I didn't know
about the group's existence until a year ago (ignorance is not
always bliss), but it's a forum for local and regional
politicians to meet and discuss EU politics. It's an interesting
organization because many EU decisions impact greatly on the
local level - and the PES Group is a chance for local and
regional social democrats to meet and work together to influence
EU policies.
I admit that this was a digression from the topic that I actually
wanted to address in this post! The reason why I brought up the
PES Group in the Committee of the Regions is that the group has
its own PES manifesto consultation - and in this
consultation there's a fifth point of discussion, in addition to
the four 'traditional' themes - namely the gender dimension.
I agree very much with the view-point of the PES Group - that
there's a significant gender aspect to all four manifesto themes
- and I hope the 'pervasiveness' of gender issues will be taken
into consideration when the PES manifesto is drafted over...

Je représente le
Parti socialiste
hongrois (MSZP) au Parlement européen. Le MSZP prend la
consultation du PSE sur son programme électoral très au sérieux.
Nous avons de fait organisé de nombreux débats dans les campagnes
de la Hongrie et avons invité nos militants à ce qu'ils participent
à la consultation en ligne dans leur propre langue, grâce à
Edit Herczog, une de mes collègues au Parlement européen qui a pris
la tête du présidium de MSZP. Je pense qu'Internet est un
instrument très important pour nous rapprocher de notre base. Le
MSZP a également envoyé des représentants à Bruxelles afin de
rencontrer le président du PSE, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, et de

En tant que
Hongroise, il est assez intéressant de remarquer les différences
d'espérance de vie entre pays européens: en moyenne, les hommes
des pays scandinaves vivent six ans de plus que les hommes
hongrois. En ce sens, les Scandinaves constituent un modèle: il
leur est par exemple plus facile de concilier vie professionnelle
et vie privée et cela vaut également pour les femmes. Si les
hommes hongrois travaillaient moins et avaient l'occasion
d'assumer une part plus égale de leurs responsabilités
familiales, ils vivraient donc plus longtemps.
A l'instar d'Hanna Isbom de Finlande, j'aime beaucoup le
modèle islandais de congé parental, dont un tiers doit être pris
par la mère, un tiers par le père et un tiers doit être partagé.
Je crois que les enfants appartiennent tant à la mère qu'au père
et que les deux parents doivent avoir le droit de prendre congé
pour eux.
En Europe, nous avons besoin d'un changement dans les mentalités
afin de rendre acceptable le fait que les hommes prennent du
temps pour le passer avec leur famille. En Hongrie, par exemple,
beaucoup d'hommes préfèrent...

Merci à notre

Preuss pour son très bon article sur la Journée pour
l'égalité de salaires en Allemagne. Je suis ravie d'apprendre que
les collègues allemands organisent également une action en faveur
de l'égalité de salaire ente hommes et femmes.
Le traité de Rome de 1957 stipule clairement qu'à travail égal,
il faut garantir un salaire égal. 50 ans après son adoption, nous
avons encore un problème: la différence de salaires entre hommes
et femmes reste encore de 15% au détriment des femmes. C'est
énorme! Cela veut dire que les femmes doivent travailler 54 jours
de plus pour toucher le salaire de leurs collègues masculins.
2007 était l'Année de l'égalité des chances et pour attirer
l'attention sur ce problème d'inégalité des salaires, le PSE
Femmes a lancé une action le 22 février. Pourquoi cette date?
Parce qu'elle correspond aux 54 jours qu'auraient à travailler
les femmes pour toucher l'équivalent du salaire des hommes. Nous

I completely agree
with PES activist Natalia Reyes when she writes that gender equality
should be one of the top priorities of the PES manifesto – as it is
a priority for the Spanish government. Having Zapatero and PSOE in government in
Spain has demonstrated that when women vote for a socialist party
their lives really improve. In many ways we are experiencing the
New Social Europe in Spain: Equal pay, childcare and attention to

Without improving the
position of women in the labour market, it is hard to create a
socially coherent Europe. A fundamental step in this direction is
the inclusion of women in the labour market. Today the employment
level of women differs across the Union, but the level is in
general lower than it is for men. That is why an increased
inclusion of women in the labour market must be an important
principle in the PES manifesto for the 2009 European elections. The
goal should be the elimination of differences in employment level
between women and men. During the last decades women in general
have gained a stronger economic position, but they have not
received the same economic independence as men. The social
environment in our society influences the economic equality between
women and men; this is in particular true when it comes to the
conditions in the labour market and in the educational system. The
design of the transfer system and the allocation of unpaid work (at

Nowadays, the panorama of the left in Europe does not seem to be very tempting. Only 7 out of 27 countries belonging to EU are ruled by socialist parties. These are: United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Cyprus. We could argue that there is a lack of real political leadership, a leadership that in other decades was embodied by politicians such as Francois Mitterrand.
The political victory of Zapatero in Spain last march gives the Spanish socialism a great opportunity to implement and develop politics that can be seen as an example for other European countries. It generates a new opportunity to take the initiative in the European context. Whereas the majority of countries in South America are governed by left parties, sometimes with a strong and questionable populist sense, and whereas United States are given an oppotunity to give the power again to the Democratic party, no matter if Clinton or Obama, the European left movement needs to reshape its political agenda, taking the initiative and dismantling the demagogic and populist discourse of conservative countries, too much focused on very sensitive and easy to be manipulated issues such as security, migration, taxes...

According to Eurostat a woman in Europe earns, in average, 15
percent less than her male colleague. With 22 percent difference
Germany takes a sad lead when it comes to pay inequality – on the
management level it is even worse (33 percent). Only a few
countries have taken action against this inequity.
The purpose of the international action day for equal
opportunities and equal pay, which has already taken place in the
US and Belgium, is to create awareness of this problem – and soon
there will also be actions in Germany. The German Network of
Business and Professional Women has taken the initiative for the
Equal Pay
Day on 15 April 2008 where the network, together with many
other women’s organizations, will organize numerous actions.
One of the activities of the German Equal Pay Day will be
‘Red Bag’
– which was already put into practice last summer in connection
with the European year of equal opportunities. At that time the
initiative went rather unnoticed by the general public - I don’t
remember having heard about it before now.
Every woman can take part in the ‘Red Bag’ action...

Thinking about the
next post of the blog – I was actually trying to remind myself
what is that people enjoy reading. Coming from the political
school of manifesto: ‘others want to see true intentions that
inspired you at the first place, to be also inspired’, I decided
to use one of my very peculiar interests while traveling;… women
magazines. From cover to cover – scanning all the pictures,
trying to get empathy for the authors of ‘letters to editor’,
looking at some clothes that are not only strange but absolutely
unaffordable for a regular employee… But above all the most
exciting and the most interesting is what the knowledge these
colorful pages give; the portrait of a woman of today. The last
time I did that reading I discovered something absolutely
disturbing; women of my own age (around 30) are the group with
the highest risk of the heart attacks. Even more terrible, most
of us had already some mini-version ones without noticing that
even!
It has been shocking to discover, but on the other hand looking
at the recent publication of the European Commission "Report on equality between women and men –
2008"...

It’s been
100 years since the women of the New York textile factory went on
strike to demand better working conditions and the right to vote.
A whole century had passed since that event. Today we live in a
world where nobody is surprised to see women on the elections
lists. But when news came out that a 25-year-old woman saved an
airplane at the Hamburg airport during the Emma hurricane, there
was disagreement as to what consisted bigger news – that she was
young or that she was a woman? The interviews with famous women –
politicians, chairpersons, directors – often include a question:
how do you manage to reconcile your work with the role of the
mother and wife. Does one ask a man how he reconciles his
professional and family functions?
Today women have a right to vote (although still not everywhere
in the world), study, work in different professions because many
decades ago the most courageous of them challenged the status
quo. Of course they suffered from contempt but today their rights
are an obvious thing.
We, European Socialists, have to fight against further
stereotypes in the perception of women and fight for changes not
only in the law but also in people’s minds. We must do that to
create tools to help women reconcile the professional career with
family life. So that no one would be...

Last week Finnish
Minister of Labour introduced a motion that parental leave should
be divided in three: one part for mother, one part for father and
one part to share however the family wants to. In Iceland they
have already implemented this model. I have been demanding it to
be implemented in Finland as well and therefore I've been forced
to answer following questions. Aren't parents capable to decide
what's best for their child and family? Is it really necessary
that society gets involved in family life by telling parents how
to share the parenthood? I think it is. Motherhood is
unfortunately one of the main reasons for inequality on the
labour market. That's why the change begins inside the family. If
we are demanding equal pay, permanent contracts and equal
pension, we need to demand shared parenthood.
Of course the Icelandic model is not the only way to reach the goal. In Sweden it has been introduced a model where family gets tax relieves if they decide to share the parental leave in half. One way is to share costs of parenthood between all employers. The question is not only about equality in the labour market, but also in families. Father should have an equal right to parenthood as mother has. I think it's a win-win situation if fathers would also stay home with their children. As a result we would have more equal...

Pourquoi donc les femmes, qui constituent en Europe 52% de la
population et 59% des diplômés universitaires, ne représentent
que 33% des dirigeants d'entreprises et 23% des députés
nationaux? Pourquoi gagnent-elles 15% de moins que les hommes? La
lutte des femmes en Europe, ça nous concerne tous. Les femmes
doivent jouir des mêmes droits que les hommes. Les femmes doivent
avoir les mêmes droits dans tous les pays de l'UE. Je dis donc:
'à droit égal, même combat'.
La Journée internationale de la Femme est plus importante que
jamais. C'est l'occasion de réfléchir à la façon de faire avancer
les choses pour les femmes en Europe à travers le programme
électoral du PSE pour les élections européennes de 2009.

Les premiers mois de débats sur la nouvelle Europe
sociale ont permis au PSE d'identifier de nombreuses
priorités et propositions.
Un thème récurrent est comment faire face aux conséquences de la
mondialisation: Esther de Barcelone nous a présenté un
excellent résumé des défis auxquels nous sommes confrontés. De
nombreuses idées nouvelles ont surgi de la discussion: réguler
les fonds souverains qui veulent acheter des entreprises
européennes stratégiques; garantir que les fonds spéculatifs
soient soumis aux mêmes règles de transparence et de respect des
droits des travailleurs; permettre aux travailleurs confrontés au
licenciement à cause d'une offre d'achat ou d'une externalisation
de la production d'acheter l'usine et de lancer leur propre
coopérative... Toutes ces propositions sont très intéressantes!
Un autre thème très débattu au niveau européen est comment créer une politique européenne d'immigration humaine et responsable, comme le propose Yohann de France, surtout dans le contexte de l'adoption de la carte bleue de l'UE et de la prochaine...

Within the borders of
EU thousands of women each day sell their bodies for sexual
pleasures. For some it’s a choice of their own or a last way, but
for 700.000 to 2 million women and children it’s not. They are
victims of trafficking. When it comes to trafficking the message

Hier, Zita Gurmai, présidente du PSE Femmes, a signé une pétition européenne pour la lutte contre le cancer du col de l'utérus. L'équipe de Yourspace a participé à la cérémonie de lancement au Parlement européen et a demandé aux participants que devait contenir le programme électoral du PSE, à leur avis, sur la question de la santé sexuelle et reproductive des femmes:

Pourquoi y a-t-il si
peu de femmes au pouvoir en Europe?
Alors que les femmes constituent la moitié de la population
européenne, elles ne représentent que 30% des eurodéputés. Les
autres institutions européennes ne font pas mieux: seuls 8
commissaires européens sur 27 sont des femmes et lors des
réunions du Conseil européen , force est de reconnaître que la
vaste majorité des chefs d'Etat et de gouvernement sont des
hommes .
Les chiffres des parlements nationaux ne sont guère plus
encourageants: en moyenne, moins de
21% des parlementaires sont des femmes.
Une façon d'améliorer la représentation des femmes est
d'introduire des quotas. En Espagne, par exemple, les listes électorales
proposées par les partis doivent être constituées au minimum de
40% de représentants des deux sexes, avec un maximum de 60%. La
loi a été introduite l'année dernière et elle sera 'mise à
l'essai' lors des élections législatives qui se dérouleront en
mars. Les quotas...

‘Le congé de maternité’ est le terme que nous utilisons
afin de décrire le congé auquel ont droit les travailleurs
lorsqu'ils fondent une famille. Mais pourquoi doit-il toujours
s'agir d'un congé 'maternel' qu'utilise la mère dans son
intégralité?
Dans de nombreux pays européens, le congé parental reste une 'question de femmes'. Le congé maternel devient facilement un piège pour les femmes – dans son nouveau rôle de mère, la femme se retrouve peu à peu écartée du marché du travail et du monde professionnel. Les problèmes tels que les salaires plus bas des femmes et le fait que les femmes bénéficient dans une moindre mesure de promotions peuvent facilement être mis en rapport avec le congé de maternité et avec le fait qu'elles restent absentes du lieu de travail pendant plusieurs mois... voire des années dans certains cas!
L'Islande, l'un des plus petits pays européens, a adopté une approche active pour remédier au côté sombre du congé de maternité. La loi islandaise oblige les hommes à participer au congé parental, ce qui permet aux femmes de revenir au travail...

Les
employeurs européens bénéficient-ils d’un rabais de 15% s’ils
engagent des femmes au lieu des hommes ? Récemment, la Commission
européenne a publié une communication qui met l’accent sur la
disparité des salaires entre les sexes, comme l’une des formes
d’inégalité auxquelles les femmes sont confrontées en Europe. En
moyenne, les femmes gagnent 15% de moins* que les hommes. En
effet, de nombreuses femmes travaillent dans des secteurs mal
rémunérés, restent cantonnées à un niveau professionnel où elles
ont tendance à plafonner, sont davantage employées dans des
emplois à temps partiel et sont victimes de discrimination pure
et simple. Concrètement, les femmes devraient travailler 15% de
temps en plus que leurs collègues masculins afin de gagner le
même salaire – en d’autres termes, pour une même année, les
femmes travaillent 15% de leur temps de travail pour rien. En
somme, entre le 9 novembre et le Nouvel An, les femmes
travaillent gratuitement!
Que peut-on faire pour endiguer cet écart des salaires ? Est-ce un problème qui n’affecte que les femmes et donc contre lequel seules les...

Chaque année en Europe 50 000 femmes développent un cancer du col de l'utérus, et 25 000 en meurent. Les programmes de dépistage efficaces pourraient éviter la quasi totalité de ces cas. Cette pétition est une action de l'Association Européenne contre le Cancer du Col de L'utérus avec le soutien de l'Union Internationale contre le Cancer.
